This article from Jane’s International Defence Review discusses the use of Visual Detection and Ranging (ViDAR) technology on the ScanEagle unmanned aerial system (UAS) platform to provide detection capabilities comparable to radar using Electrooptical (EO) and Infra Red (IR) sensors. The article describes the use and testing of the ViDAR software package integrated to a ScanEagle UAS employed on the UK exercise Unmanned Warrior 2016. The trial demonstrated that the fusion of automated image processing, long endurance UAS and advanced sensors can achieve much greater ISR coverage than traditional platforms and significantly reduced cost of acquisition and sustainment.
