If you know me, even just a little bit, you know I love science fiction.    Even more, I love the mash up of science fiction and professional military education.

I have previously written here about why I think military officers should read science fiction.  I have also had the pleasure of collaborating with Nate Finney on two science fiction reading lists in 2017 and 2018.  So, the purpose of this post is not to repeat my arguments for the use of science fiction in developing the intellectual capacity of our people.

However, I would like to share a presentation I recently gave that is related to science fiction and professional military education.  I was asked talk (along with Mick Cook) to a group of military and civilian intelligence professionals here in Canberra.  The topic was to be an exploration of our respective chapters in the recent, and really terrific, book titled Strategy Strikes Back

Unfortunately, Mick had to pull out of the presentation.  It was something about doing an interview with someone for some podcast.  So, I expanded my presentation to include a focus on intelligence, and intelligence failures, in the Star Wars universe.

I tweeted some of the slides back in September.  Here, for the first time, is the full and uncut presentation in its entirety.  It was the foundation for an excellent conversation about our profession that followed the presentation.

I would love to know what you think.

I have a few more interesting presentations, covering topics such as the Profession of Arms, Human-Machine Teaming, the Impacts of the 4th Industrial Revolution, and the Intellectual Development of Future Leaders.   If you are interested in seeing more of these presentations, or want to discuss this current article, feel free to comment on my Twitter feed @WarInTheFuture.

Have a great day!
