Andrew Kirby

Director of the Australian Command and Staff Course (Part Time)

Colonel Andrew Kirby assumed his current role as Director of the Australian Command and Staff Course (Part Time) after completing the 2024 Defence Strategic Studies Course (DSSC). He has previously served in a variety of strategic, joint, and command appointments. Privileged to have served over a decade in command roles, he most recently led domestic operations in Queensland as Deputy Commander Joint Task Group 629.3 (2021–22). 

He previously commanded the 9th Battalion, The Royal Queensland Regiment (2018–20), including two years forming a battlegroup within Army’s 3rd Brigade. In his civilian career, he serves as Director of an independent strategic advisory firm. Holding multiple bachelor’s and master’s degrees in strategy, business, and history, he was awarded the Deakin Prize for highest overall achievement on the DSSC. He is currently pursuing a PhD focused on strategic surprise.
