There have been a few tips I have gathered over the years that have done me well. Firstly, with your subordinates and superiors, be friendly but not friends (harsh I know but it serves you well in the long run), be honest always but mix it with diplomacy, be yourself because everyone else is taken, communicate communicate communicate and last but not least, if you are going to 'be there' then 'be there'. Give your undivided attention to the situation.
...also be cautious about your use of humour - not everyone sees the world in the same way!
