Some books stick with you forever. Which professional reading shaped how you lead, think, or decide? Let’s build a reading list that helps others too.
Post a book title, why it mattered to you, and who you’d recommend it to.
The books that have shaped my leadership are not ones of war or military leaders but ones that have made me internally reflect. Who Moved My Cheese by Dr Spencer Johnson, The Courage to Be Disliked by Book by Fumitake Koga and Ichiro Kishimi and The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. Very powerful books but my tip is to find books that speak your language and ones that you can relate to.
A Road Less Travelled by M. Scott Peck shaped my thinking about a number of matters in terms of interpersonal relationships. The book addressed some of the myths and provided me with a new way of looking a personal development.
I found that "Turn the Ship Around" by L. David Marquet to be a great read to help me actually implement mission command. I had an instinct to trust my team, and to want to develop them, and this book gave me a practical example of how another leader had done it. There are some really simple things that can have a huge difference to building subordinates' competence and confidence in decision making, and also can reduce the leader's own cognitive load. I now say "I intend to...." all the time!
This is a worthwhile read for leaders at all levels, and it is also good for followers. It will help followers ASK for the structural / behavioural things that they will need from their leader in order to develop and practice mission command.
